United MileagePlus: A Beginner's Guide to Earning and Redeeming Miles
United MileagePlus is one of the largest airline loyalty programs in the world, with miles redeemable on United flights plus a network of 40+ Star Alliance airline partners. It’s also one of the most accessible programs for US travelers — with easy earning through Chase credit cards and broad redemption options.
Here’s everything a beginner needs to know.
How MileagePlus Miles Work
MileagePlus miles are a currency you earn and spend on travel. Unlike cash, they have no fixed value — a mile might be worth 0.8 cents on a domestic economy ticket and 5 cents on a business class international redemption. The goal is to redeem them where they’re worth the most.
Miles are earned through:
- Flying United or Star Alliance partners
- Credit card spending
- Shopping portals and dining programs
- Hotel and car rental partners
- Various promotions
Miles expire after 18 months of inactivity — any earning or redemption resets the clock.
The Best Way to Earn MileagePlus Miles Without Flying
Chase United Credit Cards
United and Chase have a co-branded card partnership that makes MileagePlus miles among the easiest to accumulate:
United℠ Explorer Card ($95/year)
- 2x on United purchases, hotels, restaurants
- 1x on everything else
- Welcome bonus: typically 50,000-70,000 miles
- 2 free United Club passes per year
- First checked bag free (saves $35 each way)
United Quest℠ Card ($250/year)
- 3x on United, 2x on dining and hotel
- $125 annual United credit
- 5,000 miles back on award redemptions (up to 10,000/year)
- Welcome bonus: typically 80,000+ miles
United Club℠ Infinite Card ($525/year)
- 4x on United, 2x on travel and dining
- Full United Club membership (lounges)
- Welcome bonus: typically 80,000+ miles
Chase Ultimate Rewards Transfer
The most flexible path: earn Chase Ultimate Rewards through a Sapphire card (which earns broadly across categories) and transfer to MileagePlus at 1:1 when you’re ready to book a specific trip.
This is often smarter than a United co-branded card because Ultimate Rewards are more versatile — you can send them to United, or Hyatt, or Southwest, depending on what makes sense for each trip.
MileagePlus Shopping and Dining
MileagePlus Shopping: Earn bonus miles at hundreds of online retailers. Rates range from 1-15+ miles per $1. Use Cashback Monitor to compare against other portals before each purchase.
MileagePlus Dining: Register your credit cards with the program and earn 3-5 miles per $1 at enrolled restaurants — on top of whatever your credit card earns.
How United Prices Awards
United moved to a dynamic pricing model — award costs vary based on demand, route, and how far in advance you book. There’s no longer a fixed award chart for most redemptions.
General ranges (verify current pricing on united.com):
- Short domestic: 5,000-15,000 miles one-way
- Transcontinental domestic: 12,000-25,000 miles one-way
- Short international: 15,000-30,000 miles one-way
- International business class: 50,000-100,000+ miles one-way
Business and first class redemptions typically offer the best cents-per-mile value — you’re getting significantly discounted prices on seats that cost $3,000-10,000+ in cash.
Partner Awards: Where United Miles Shine
One of MileagePlus’s biggest strengths is the ability to book Star Alliance partner awards with United miles. This is often where the best value is.
Examples of partner sweet spots (verify current availability and pricing):
- ANA (All Nippon Airways): US-Japan business class for 55,000-88,000 miles round-trip (compared to $8,000-15,000 in cash)
- Lufthansa: US-Europe business class
- Singapore Airlines: Various Asia routes
To find partner award availability, search directly on the partner airline’s website for available seats, then book through United. Some partners show better availability on their own sites.
Saver vs. Everyday Awards
United shows two award types:
- Saver awards: Lower mileage cost, limited seats
- Everyday awards: More widely available, higher mileage cost
Always search for Saver availability first. When United releases seats at Saver prices (often 21+ days in advance for partner flights), the value can be significantly higher.
MileagePlus Elite Status
MileagePlus Premier status tiers (Silver, Gold, Platinum, 1K) provide:
- Upgrade priority
- Bonus miles earning
- Waived fees
- Lounge access (Platinum and above)
- Better award seat access
For frequent United fliers, status can add significant value. For occasional fliers, the credit card benefits (free bags, priority boarding) often matter more than status.
Common MileagePlus Redemption Mistakes
Booking at Everyday prices. Wait for Saver availability or set alerts.
Redeeming for merchandise or statement credits. Miles are worth 0.4-0.6 cents toward merchandise — terrible value vs. 1.5-4+ cents for flights.
Letting miles expire. Set a calendar reminder if you’re not actively earning. Even a small dining purchase or shopping portal order resets the 18-month clock.
Ignoring partner airlines. Many United fliers don’t know they can book ANA, Lufthansa, and Singapore Airlines with their miles. Partner awards are often the highest-value redemptions.
