Marriott Bonvoy Points Guide: How to Earn and Redeem

Marriott Bonvoy has over 30 hotel brands and 9,000+ properties worldwide — from budget Fairfield Inns to ultra-luxury St. Regis and Ritz-Carlton. The points program is one of the most widely useful in hospitality. Here’s how to use it well.

How Marriott Bonvoy Points Work

Bonvoy uses a dynamic pricing model — there are no fixed award charts. The number of points required for a free night depends on the hotel’s current cash rate, fluctuating with demand and season.

General range:

  • Budget properties (Fairfield, Courtyard): 10,000-25,000 points/night
  • Mid-range (Marriott, Westin, Sheraton): 25,000-50,000 points/night
  • Upper upscale (W Hotels, Renaissance, Autograph): 40,000-70,000 points/night
  • Luxury (St. Regis, Ritz-Carlton, Edition): 60,000-100,000+ points/night

Points are worth approximately 0.7-1 cent each on average, though value varies widely. Luxury redemptions during low-demand periods offer significantly better value.

The 5th Night Free Benefit

One of Bonvoy’s best features: when you book award stays of 5+ consecutive nights, the 5th night is free. This effectively gives you a 20% discount on week-long stays.

For a vacation requiring 5 nights, book a 5-night award and get the 5th night at no additional points cost. This works for any award redemption.

Earning Bonvoy Points

Staying at Marriott Properties

Base earning is 10 points per $1 spent at Marriott properties. Elite members earn more (Silver: 11 pts, Gold: 12.5 pts, Platinum: 15 pts, Titanium/Ambassador: 17.5 pts).

Marriott Bonvoy Credit Cards

Marriott and American Express co-brand cards are the fastest path to large point balances without travel:

Marriott Bonvoy Boundless (Chase):

  • 6x points at Marriott
  • 3x on dining, gas, groceries
  • 2x on all other purchases
  • 1 free night award annually (up to 35,000 points value)
  • Includes Silver Elite status

Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant (Amex):

  • 6x points at Marriott
  • 3x on flights and dining
  • $300 Marriott dining credit
  • 1 free night award annually (up to 85,000 points value)
  • Platinum Elite status with the card
  • Priority Pass Select membership

The Brilliant’s free night award (up to 85,000 points) is particularly valuable — that’s enough for mid-to-upper-range properties that would otherwise cost 60,000-80,000 points.

Marriott Bonvoy Business (Amex):

  • 6x at Marriott
  • 4x at restaurants, gas, phone, shipping
  • 2x elsewhere
  • 1 free night award annually (up to 35,000 points)
  • Gold Elite status

Transferring Points from Credit Card Programs

Major transferable points currencies can convert to Bonvoy:

  • Chase Ultimate Rewards → Bonvoy: 1:1 (1,000 UR = 1,000 Bonvoy)
  • American Express Membership Rewards → Bonvoy: 1:1

These conversions are not typically recommended unless you have a specific high-value redemption in mind — Bonvoy points are less flexible than holding UR or MR points.

Buying Points

Marriott sells points directly, occasionally at 30-33% off during promotional periods. Buying points to cover a redemption can make sense if a specific property is the target and the math works out favorably.

Best Redemption Strategies

Sweet Spot: Off-Peak Luxury

Bonvoy’s dynamic pricing means luxury hotels during low-demand periods can offer extraordinary value. An off-season stay at a St. Regis or Ritz-Carlton where the cash rate is temporarily suppressed (holiday weeks, city events, etc.) can price as low as 50,000-60,000 points — a fraction of what the same property charges in peak season.

Watch for this: book a specific property you want, check award prices across the year, and book the off-peak window.

5-Night Award Stays

As mentioned — any 5-night redemption gives you the 5th night free. Plan vacations around this when possible.

Points + Cash Awards

Bonvoy allows a combination of points + cash for some redemptions. Useful when your points balance is short of a full award.

Transfer to Airlines

Bonvoy points transfer to 40+ airline partners at a 3:1 ratio — meaning 3 Bonvoy points = 1 airline mile. For every 60,000 points transferred, you receive a 5,000-mile bonus (so 60,000 → 25,000 miles).

This transfer rate is poor value for most airlines, but it provides flexibility when you have an excess Bonvoy balance and a specific flight redemption in mind.

Comparing Bonvoy to Other Hotel Programs

ProgramNetwork SizeBest Feature
Marriott Bonvoy9,000+ propertiesSize and global coverage
Hilton Honors7,000+ properties5th night free, no blackout dates
World of Hyatt1,100+ propertiesConsistently best-value redemptions
IHG One Rewards6,000+ propertiesGood for budget stays

Hyatt is widely considered the best value per point despite having fewer properties. For luxury redemptions in North America, Hyatt points consistently outperform Bonvoy at 1.5-2.5¢/point.

Marriott wins on sheer size — if you travel broadly, especially internationally, Bonvoy’s global reach means there’s usually a property on the program wherever you go.
