A big transfer bonus sounds exciting — until you do the math

Tripling your points is the kind of headline that makes loyalty nerds pay attention. Bilt’s Rent Day promotions — which run on the first of every month — occasionally feature enhanced transfer bonuses to select partners, including Hilton Honors. A reported large bonus to Hilton can mean every 1,000 Bilt points you move becomes significantly more Hilton points. On paper, exciting. In practice, I’d think twice before touching this one.

Here’s the honest reason: Hilton points are worth somewhere in the neighborhood of 0.4–0.6 cents each for most redemptions. That’s just the reality of a program that’s devalued significantly over the years and now prices a lot of aspirational properties at 95,000–150,000 points per night. Bilt points, by contrast, are widely valued around 1.5–2.0 cents each because of where they can go — airlines like United, Air Canada, Turkish, and American, plus World of Hyatt at a 1:1 ratio.

So let’s run the actual numbers.

The worked example that changes the conversation

Say you have 30,000 Bilt points. You’re eyeing a Hilton property that runs 60,000 points per night — a mid-tier Category 6 or so. If a 200% bonus were in play, your 30,000 Bilt points would become 90,000 Hilton points. That covers one night and leaves 30,000 Hilton points to spare, which might get you a decent Category 3 property.

Sounds fine. But consider the alternative: those same 30,000 Bilt points transfer 1:1 to United MileagePlus. On a saver award, 30,000 United miles gets you a round-trip domestic economy ticket, or you’re partway to a business class short-haul redemption. The cash value of that domestic round-trip easily clears $300–$400. The Hilton night at that Category 6 property might retail for $200–$300.

Even with a large bonus, the Hilton path frequently loses to Bilt’s airline partners in raw value. The bonus closes the gap — significantly — but it doesn’t flip the math in Hilton’s favor for most people.

At 0.5 cents per Hilton point (a fair average), 90,000 Hilton points are worth $450. Your 30,000 Bilt points at 1.7 cents each were worth $510. You actually lost value in this scenario, even after tripling the Hilton points. That’s not a knock on Hilton specifically — it’s the structural reality that flexible points currencies almost always beat hotel-locked points.

When a Hilton bonus actually makes sense

I don’t want to be dismissive, because there are real situations where this is the right move.

If you’re targeting a specific high-value Hilton property — think a luxury resort in the Maldives or a top-tier city hotel that prices at $800–$1,000+ per cash night — Hilton points can deliver well above 0.5 cents in value. At 0.8–1.0 cents per point, 90,000 Hilton points from 30,000 Bilt points are worth $720–$900. That beats most airline redemptions with the same 30,000 Bilt points.

Hilton’s fifth-night-free benefit on standard award stays (available to Diamond members or on five-night award bookings) can also push per-point value higher if you can structure the redemption correctly. A five-night award that only prices four nights is meaningful.

Another case: you’ve already got the airline miles you need. If your travel calendar is set and you’re not chasing any specific flight redemptions, a Hilton bonus makes it less painful to move points into the program. Even then, I’d transfer only what I need for a specific confirmed redemption — not speculatively.

The Bilt point universe is genuinely rare

Bilt currently lists 19 airline partners and 7 hotel partners — 26 transfer partners in total — and most transfer at 1:1. The Hilton Honors partnership launched on May 8, 2024, making it a relatively recent addition to the lineup. It’s a good partnership to have. The question isn’t whether Hilton is a useful partner; it’s whether any given bonus moment is worth locking points into a hotel program.

Other hotel partners on the Bilt side include World of Hyatt, which in my view remains one of the best-value hotel programs in existence. Transferring to Hyatt at 1:1 is almost always going to beat a transfer to Hilton at 1:1, and often even at 1:3. Hilton simply has too many devalued sweet spots and too many properties requiring enormous point balances. Hyatt’s award chart still rewards you for knowing where to look.

The Rent Day mechanic and status tier upgrades

One thing worth understanding: Bilt’s Rent Day promotions sometimes allow members to upgrade their transfer bonus to a higher status tier using Bilt Cash. If you’re sitting on Bilt Cash from everyday purchases, you might be able to push a base bonus to a higher percentage. Confirm the specifics on Bilt’s site before assuming you qualify for the best available rate — bonus tiers and eligibility can vary by card and status level.

Note that the specific details of any given month’s Hilton bonus aren’t always announced in advance. Bilt typically drops Rent Day promotions on or just before the first of the month, so check the official Bilt Rent Day page rather than relying on third-party reporting.

Bilt Cash, for context, is the cashback leg of the program. Members earn $50 in Bilt Cash for every 25,000 Bilt points accrued toward elite status, and some cardholders opt to earn 4% back in Bilt Cash on everyday purchases instead of points. Redeeming $30 in Bilt Cash can unlock 1,000 Bilt points on housing payments. If you’ve accumulated Bilt Cash and were going to transfer to Hilton anyway, using it to bump your bonus tier is a smart play.

Who should seriously consider a Hilton Rent Day bonus

You’ve got a Hilton stay booked or nearly confirmed, the property costs more cash than you want to spend, and you’ve done the per-point math for that specific property. In that case, transferring during a meaningful bonus window is genuinely better than a 1:1 base transfer and can be worth it.

You’re Hilton Diamond and trying to maximize the fifth-night-free benefit on a longer stay at a high-value property. The bonus helps you move fewer Bilt points for the same Hilton balance.

You have excess Bilt points beyond what you realistically need for airline redemptions in the next 12–18 months. Points currency is only as valuable as your ability to use it. If your Bilt balance is deep and you’re not going to burn through airline partner awards anytime soon, taking a partial position in Hilton during a bonus window is defensible.

Who should almost certainly skip it

Anyone holding Bilt points without a specific Hilton redemption in mind. Speculative transfers into hotel programs are almost always a mistake. Hilton points expire after 24 months of inactivity, and the redemption landscape could look very different two years from now.

Also, renters who are still early in building their Bilt balance. The card earns up to 1.25 points per dollar on rent and mortgage payments with no transaction fees — which is genuinely valuable for a category that usually earns nothing. If you’re still building toward a meaningful first redemption, let the balance grow in Bilt’s flexible ecosystem rather than locking it in Hilton.
